WEDNESDAY MARCH 30

Flowers in Otavalo market. One of the churches in Otavalo. Lots of meat in the market.
One of our rooms at La Luna Hostal.

Views on our hike. More info below.

Spent the morning in Otavalo, walking to parks, looking inside cathedrals, and enjoying the market. Enjoyed a delicious almuerzo with typical Ecuadorian food.

Took a taxi to La Luna, a hostal south of Otavalo in the mountains. A lot cooler here with beautiful views of valleys and farms. Took a walk up one of the mountains and enjoyed amazing views of Otavalo and a large lake. Was a very steep hike, needed to take our time because of the high altitude.

Hiked through rolling hillsides and meadows with friendly cows checking us out. Reminded me of climbing the Swiss Alps.

It's now about 5:30 and the clouds are beginning to cover the valley and slowly make their way upwards toward us. You feel a bit like you are in an airplane looking down on the clouds.

The electricity went off again – this time while we were enjoying dinner with a couple from Minnesota and a couple from Germany. Enjoyed sharing stories of travels and adventures in Ecuador. As we walked back to our room in the dark holding the candle to find our way, we noticed that we were now in the clouds.

No internet here, but nothing can replace sitting by a warm roaring fire, listening to the cracking wood, eating sweet fresh mangos we got at the market today.

Will upload this to the blog sometime on Thursday when we get to our hostal in Peguche that should have internet.

  1. Wow, what adventures you're having. Are power outages that common? I don't believe that happened when we were there did it? What a great trip to meet the musician and his wife!
