We left Riobamba Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and traveled down the Avenue of the Volcanoes on the Alausi bus. We traveled through beautiful mountains and valleys where every possible space of soil was farmed. As we continued to climb altitude we began approaching the clouds and a few minutes past Guamote, we were immersed in the clouds.
By the time we arrived at Alausi, it was raining and still immersed in fog.
The bus dropped us off at the bus station in the center of town. We walked to four different hostels. They were all $12 per person for room with private bath, but the rooms were not very nice.
We finally found another hostel that was in the Lonely Planet book. We walked up three floors of stairs that appeared pretty trashy, but when we entered the third floor, everything changed. The rooms and bathrooms are very attractive. There is a nice common sitting area with sofas and a balcony that overlooks the main street, 5 de Junio.
We then explored the town in the fog and rain and found a nice Chinese restaurant that seemed like a safe place to eat with food that I could digest.
A huge statute of Saint Peter is high on a hill overlooking the town. The dress of the people is stunningly colorful and beautiful.
It is now a little after 8 and I am sitting on the balcony, the rain has stopped and the fog has lifted. And next door, the praise team is practicing for Sunday morning worship. The music is loud enough to be heard for the surrounding one or two blocks, but it is very worshipful and uplifting. It nourishes my soul to hear people praising the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Wish all of the praise team were here. You would love to join them.
